Here is the whole range of the 12AU7 types ever manufactured by Tung-Sol Lamp Works, USA : The Black Glass Black Plates type of late 1940's, the Black Glass Gray Plates type of early 1950's, the Clear Glass Long Gray Plates D-Getter type of mid-late 1950's and the Clear Glass Large Gray Plates O-Getter type of early-mid 1960's... Each type has its own sonic signature specifically but all share one greatest common divider : Good Sound!
In general the Tung-Sol's have smoother upper end compared to RCA Clear Tops. The D-Getter types have good resolution and transparency with nice tones whereas the later O-Getter types are on the more neutral side. The most sought-after ones are the rare Black Glass types.
The larger part of the Black Glass and other D-Getter types came as the Hickok Elect. Instr. Co. spare parts supply that we recently acquired. These are mostly in well stored original boxes with a packing date of June 1962. Besides the few other American brands, the Hickok's supply includes a larger amount of the pre-1963 RCA Clear Tops as well.

Grade A - The best in the stock. Lowest noise and microphony
with the tightest balanced sections we have available. This is typically 10% or
often tighter given the large volumes of our
stock.
Grade B - Low noise and microphonics with a section balance
typically between 15% and 20%, but may be higher depending on available
stock.
Grade C - Lowest noise but slightly microphonic. Section balance will be similar to Grade A or B. This grade is only suitable for use in the driver stage of an amplifier, or the output/buffer stage of a DAC or CD Player.
I purchased TUNG-SOL JTL 12AU7 Black Glass Gray Plates Early 1950's and used them as phase splitter in my JADIS JA200 poweramp, which I modified with teflon caps bypass and silver-copper hybrid signal wire. These tubes brought me back the magic of my original Jadis, creamy euphonic sound without compromise on speed and extension thanks to the mods.

I bought 2 of the 1950-version, to my Prima Luna. Vow - What a heavy bass!! Even at lowest level, this has a way of making electric guitars and vocals, play like they are in your living room. While the bass is even more astonishing! There is nothing like it!!!
